The 10 fastest-growing jobs over the next 5 years—some pay over $100,000

New technologies and the escalating climate crisis are changing the landscape of work at an “unprecedented rate,” according to a new report from the World Economic Forum.

Between now and 2027, 69 million jobs will be created worldwide— but 83 million roles are expected to be eliminated, creating a net decrease of 14 million jobs, the WEF reports.

Their findings are largely based on a survey of 803 companies that employ a total of 11.3 million workers in 45 different economies around the world.

The rise of generative AI and other smart technologies as well as the drive to “go green” will lead some jobs to soar in demand over the next five years, and put others at risk of becoming obsolete.

Here are the 10 jobs that businesses expect to grow the most over the next five years, according to the WEF’s report:

  • AI and machine learning specialists
  • Sustainability specialists
  • Business intelligence analysts
  • Information security analysts
  • Fintech engineers
  • Data analysts and scientists
  • Robotics engineers
  • Electrotechnology engineers
  • Agricultural equipment operators
  • Digital transformation specialists

Demand for AI and machine learning specialists is expected to grow by 40%, adding about one million jobs to the global economy over the next five years, as more companies leverage AI to automate processes and better forecast customer demand, among other uses.

At the same time, global efforts to reduce carbon emissions including stricter environmental regulations and the localization of supply chains are giving rise to “a wealth of green jobs” across industries, such as sustainability specialists and renewable energy engineers.

It’s unsurprising that many of the fastest-growing roles are in the tech sector as more than three-quarters of the companies surveyed by the WEF said they are planning to adopt “big data” analytics, cloud computing, AI and other emerging technologies in their organizations within the next five years.

Coca-Cola, for example, is using AI to improve customer service and ordering and experimenting with ChatGPT to “enhance marketing capabilities and business operations,” per its latest earnings report.

Other industries besides tech, manufacturing and retail that could see significant job growth thanks to new technologies include education, agriculture and health, Saadia Zahidi, managing director at the WEF, told CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick and Geoff Cutmore Monday at the WEF’s growth summit in Geneva, Switzerland.

“In part that is happening not because these are unsafe, low-paid, low-skilled jobs around the world,” she explained. “These are higher skilled, higher value-add jobs enabled by technology in the fields of agriculture, health [and] education.”

The WEF’s report echoes earlier findings from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which also identified jobs in data and renewable energy as some of the fastest-growing occupations in the U.S. over the next decade.

Information security analysts and data scientists appeared on both lists, as two of the fastest-growing occupations between now and 2027 and most in-demand roles over the next decade.

Both jobs, which typically require a bachelor’s degree, come with six-figure salaries: The median salary for information security analysts in the U.S. is $112,000, while the median pay for data scientists is $103,500, per the BLS.

Fake remote, hybrid jobs are being shared online to trick candidates

Originally published by By Cortney Moore, Fox Business

Some job seekers who are looking for fully remote or hybrid jobs say they’re coming across opportunities that claim to be work-from-home-friendly, but will later hear from recruiters who end up revealing otherwise.

The alleged bait-and-switch tactic has become a topic of discussion on social media, including on TikTok, where jobseekers have been sharing their experiences with surprise job terms and misleading job postings.

On April 18, Jamie Jackson, 41, of Nashville, Tennessee, uploaded a video of an apparent mislabeled job posting to her TikTok account @humorousresources where she calls out job postings on popular career websites.

The role that caught Jackson’s eye was an administrative assistant job in Lake Worth, Florida, which is labeled as a “remote” and “WFH” (short for work-from-home) opportunity, but the job posting goes on to say that it’s actually not a remote position.

“Administrative assistant. Remote. Work-from-home.”

Jackson read aloud in her TikTok video as she goes over the role that’s been shared to LinkedIn by a third-party recruiting company called Get.It Recruit – Administrative.

“What’s that down there in the yellow?” Jackson continued as she called out the posting’s text, which she highlighted with a digital yellow marker.

“If you are looking for a remote position, please do not apply.” The job posting reads, to which Jackson replied.

“Why don’t you proofread? Proofread your postings.”

FOX Business reached out to Get.It Recruit – Administrative for comment.

In a TikTok direct message, Jackson wrote that she’s suspicious of job postings that have remote and work-from-home labels that are contradicted in job descriptions.

“I do not think it’s a proofreading mistake,” she wrote.

“I believe it’s more a way to trick candidates into applying. Thinking candidates won’t read the fine details of the job posting.”

Commenters under Jackson’s TikTok post have shared that they’re also skeptical that human error is involved with mislabeled job postings.

“They do this on purpose to get attention. So frustrating,” one TikTok user wrote.

“I see this so much, and it tells me they’re not a company I’d want to work for if they’re being deceptive in their job postings,” another TikTok user wrote.

“Done on purpose, just like one salary range in the header and then some nonsense about how that won’t be the salary in the meat of the listing,” another TikTok user noted.

“Are recruiters trying to boost their ‘leads’ metrics? Tell their boss they have 30 phone calls with prospective candidates?” one TikTok user questioned.

A TikTok user who claims to be from Oregon replied to Jackson’s post with a story of how she’s reportedly received calls from two different recruiters after applying to remote and hybrid jobs online, and she was later informed during phone screenings that the roles she applied for were meant for full-time in-person applicants.

“One person said, ‘That was a mistake on our part. Really sorry to waste your time. I’m going to repost that and make sure it doesn’t say work-from-home anymore,’” the TikTok user recalled.

“She reposted the next day, and it still said work-from-home.”

The TikTok user who replied to Jackson theorized that companies are intentionally mislabeling job postings in order to get a larger pool of qualified candidates.

Jackson wrote that she’s suspicious of job postings that have remote and work-from-home labels that are contradicted in job descriptions.

Having more candidates to choose from could improve a recruitment service’s or hiring manager’s chance of finding someone to cave and accept a full-time in-person job, she concluded.

Clarify Capital, a New York City-based financial consulting firm, released a survey in the fall of 2022 that consulted 1,045 hiring managers on “ghost jobs,” also known as job postings that have been uploaded, but aren’t actively being filled.

The survey found that 37% of hiring managers admitted to posting jobs they “aren’t actively trying to fill” because they want to “have an active pool of applicants in case of turnover.”

Job seekers have been sharing questionable job postings on social media to vent their frustration and suspicions online.

On TikTok, the hashtag #jobscams has more than 6.7 million views while the hashtag #fakejobs has 3.8 million views.

Many of the reported job postings that have been called out as potential scams and fake leads appear to be labeled as remote or hybrid opportunities.

Plenty of jobs, not enough workers

Published: Feb. 28, 2023 at 5:46 PM EST  originally on WWNY

There are thousands of jobs available in Jefferson County but not enough people to fill all of them. It’s causing some business owners to look to the future and adapt to a problem that local leaders say they are trying to tackle.

According to The WorkPlace Executive Director Cheryl Mayforth, there are 3,000 jobs across the county waiting to be filled, but the pool of those who can apply just doesn’t meet the need.

“It’s a quality of life issue. Housing is really a barrier in our area. It’s very expensive and so wages are not in line with housing costs,” she said.

Mayforth says it’s one factor that has caused a 10 percent workforce decrease over the last 10 years.

Another reason is the Baby Boomer generation stepping into retirement.

“They lived to work and what we are finding - our Millennials and Gen Zs - is they want to work to live,” said Mayforth.

One Watertown restaurant, Craft 836 Canteen, has found its “fast casual” approach has cut down on staffing needs.

Owner Mike Sboro says they don’t use traditional wait staff. Customers order at a counter or scan a QR code at the table with a phone. Then a food runner delivers the order to their table.

“This is about a 90 to 100-seat area between the bar and the eatery. We have been able to cover that whole area many, many times with just 3 people,” said Sboro

He says in their first year of operation, they are doing well and have been able to save money with this concept.

But even with fewer staff per shift, the need for help is still there.

He says they want to expand to 7-day a week service

“We believe that it is there, so that is why we are hiring. Not because we can’t find anybody. We haven’t really asked or advertised yet but we know it is always an issue for sure,” said Sboro.

Watertown Local Development Corporation CEO Don Rutherford brought in Mayforth to speak about the issue last week.

He tells 7 News that they don’t have an answer yet on how to tackle it but he feels more assistance with training employees could be part of the solution.
