With an uncertain economic landscape, inflation that is still running hot and fear of a recession, it’s no surprise that 31% of American workers express concern about their employers potentially planning budget cuts or layoffs, according to a Dec. 14 Workforce Confidence survey by LinkedIn. But against this backdrop, there are reasons to be optimistic, as some jobs are recession-proof, according to a study.

“Overall, this year’s shocks will re-open economic wounds that were only partially healed post-pandemic. In short, the worst is yet to come and, for many people, 2023 will feel like a recession,” the International Monetary Fund noted in a recent report.

Yet not all is gloom and doom for American workers. Although, as GOBankingRates has reported previously, some jobs are particularly vulnerable to cuts during a recession, there are also so-called “recession-proof” jobs that are likely to keep you employed regardless of what the economy does. A Payscale report describes them as those where “employers are spending more to fill these roles due to labor scarcity and increased competition.”

“The jobs on the list tell a story, with a mix of essential service jobs and office jobs, where the opportunity to continue working remote is also part of what is driving the market,” according to the report.

Payscale compiled a list of the most recession-proof jobs by wage growth. Here are the top 10, along with median employee-reported annual pay and expected job growth:

1. Waiter/Waitress

• Median pay: $19,900
• Salary growth: 30%

2. Private Banker

• Median pay: $93,000
• Salary growth: 25%

3. Media Director

• Median pay: $108,000
• Salary growth: 23%

4. Police, Fire or Ambulance Dispatcher

• Median pay: $44,500
• Salary growth: 19%

5. Sales Consultant

• Median pay: $56,800
• Salary growth: 18%

6. Microbiologist

• Median pay: $59,900
• Salary growth: 16%

7. Marketing and Business Development Director

• Median pay: $119,000
• Salary growth: 16%

8. Dock Worker

• Median pay: $41,100
• Salary growth: 15%

9. Electrocardiogram Technician

Bookkeeper

Average Salary: $30/hour

With this side gig — which typically pays $30 an hour, according to FlexJobs — your duties can include performing bank reconciliations, payroll needs and creating financial reports. Providing bookkeeping services to more than one company at once can increase your earning potential.

Online Instructor

Average Salary: $30/hour

Share your knowledge with the world — remotely and on your own schedule — by becoming an online instructor. Computer and IT skills courses are especially in demand, according to FlexJobs.

Fashion Consultant

Average Salary: $50 to $500/hour

Fashionistas with an eye for current trends might be able to find side jobs as fashion consultants for high-end shoppers. Some clients are willing to pay top dollar for fashion help and will even ask their personal shoppers to select entire wardrobes for different seasons.

Executive Assistant

It’s possible to find executive assistant positions that are remote and part time if you already have a few years of experience under your belt, according to FlexJobs. Duties can include setting up meetings, responding to emails, tracking appointments and more.

You can make $65 an hour without going into an office every day, according to FlexJobs.

Senior Accountant

Taking accounting gigs can become a major moneymaker. This job will require preparing statements and audits, documenting transactions and performing end-of-month tasks.

To earn the high salary of a senior accountant, you typically need five years of experience, according to FlexJobs.

Social Media Marketing Specialist

Disc Jockey

Average Salary: $42/hour

Between corporate events, birthday parties and weddings, it’s possible to find enough side gigs as a DJ to make a good living. Although the average salary is $42 an hour, the top 10% of DJs bring in $123 an hour, according to PayScale.

Online Reseller

Average Salary: $46/hour

Having an eye for a bargain can make you rich as a reseller. Whether your passion is clothes, shoes or something more obscure, selling items for more than what you paid for them on eBay, Craigslist or apps like Poshmark can be a lucrative side gig.

Alexandra Marquez, a thrift store pro who resells the items she finds on Poshmark, told Business Insider that she left her $50,000-a-year corporate job at a marketing company to focus on her reselling business full time. She now makes $5,000 a month.

Companies are scaling back their remote offerings even though jobs that allow you to work from home — or from anywhere in the world — continue to be hot commodities amongst the workforce.

Remote jobs fell to 14% of all active listings on LinkedIn in September, down from a peak of 20% in February, according to a new report from the platform. Yet demand for flexible work options continues to climb: In September, remote job postings drew in 52% of applications on LinkedIn, compared to 50% of applications in February.

So, where are all the jobs with this coveted flexibility? 

To help people find the best remote opportunities, FlexJobs, a membership service for jobseekers, identified the 15 companies with the most remote job openings, including full-time and part-time opportunities, this fall. FlexJobs looked at over 35,000 jobs posted on the site’s database between August and October 2022 to compile their list.

Here are the top 15 companies hiring for remote jobs right now, according to FlexJobs:

3. Affirm
4. Thermo Fisher Scientific
5. Kraken
6. Toast, Inc.
7. Lincoln Financial Group
8. Twilio
9. DoorDash
10. HubSpot
11. BCD Travel
12. GitHub

15. Alight Solutions

While not all of the companies listed include pay ranges in their job postings, some employers, including CVS Health, UnitedHealth Group and HubSpot, provide estimated salaries with their advertised positions — and several of the available remote jobs offer competitive salaries of $100,000 or higher. 

A remote account executive on HubSpot’s sales team, for example, can expect to earn between $134,000 and $144,000, while a remote medical director at Aetna, a CVS Health company, earns between $141,500 and $302,500 per year. A remote mergers and acquisitions analyst at UnitedHealth Group working out of New York, on the other hand, can expect to earn $72,800 to $129,900 per year. 

In spite of fewer remote job openings, Jennifer Shappley, LinkedIn’s vice president of global talent acquisition, expects flexibility to remain a top priority for workers. 

“Even facing an uncertain future, people still highly value two areas of work life that have gotten a lot of attention since the start of the pandemic: work-life balance, and flexible-work arrangements – including remote work,” Shappley said in LinkedIn’s report, adding that she expects the two attributes to be “top talent drivers” for the next couple of years. 

In a competitive remote job market, your visibility as a candidate could be the key to a successful job search, Toni Frana, a career services manager at FlexJobs, tells CNBC Make It. “Positioning yourself as an expert in your area, being active on social platforms and engaging with others may be the differentiator between you and other candidates,” she says.

Frana also stresses the importance of networking, which can also help you stand out in a tight job market. Professional, virtual communities on platforms like Slack, Reddit, Discord and LinkedIn, for example, offer ample opportunities to meet people who work at remote companies you’re interested in or make personal connections.

As in the traditional job market, “referrals tend to get much more traction than a cold application” for remote jobs, Frana adds. “It’s important not to overlook this part of the process!”
